What are the 5 primary classes of fire extinguishers?

Class A : Suitable for paper, wood, and textiles   Class B: Suitable for flammable liquids   Class C: Suitable for flammable appliances etc.

Class D: Suitable for flammable metals  Class K: Suitable for vegetable oils, animal oils and fats in cooking appliances (commercial kitchens)

How often does my fire extinguisher need to be inspected?

It seems like a lot but we have you covered and can help you stay organized and up-to-date for the Fire Inspector. Monthly inspections by the owner of the fire extinguisher.  The State Fire Marshal and Department of Insurance requires fire extinguishers to be inspected annually by a professional. Internal maintenance every 6 years and Hydrostatic testing every 12 years by a professional. 

What do you look for during a fire extinguisher inspection?

Annual fire extinguisher inspection, we first check the pressure gauge to see if the fire extinguisher is in green. Next, we search for any rust, dents, or damage that would cause the fire extinguisher to not work properly. Last, we see when the fire extinguisher was manufactured or when the last maintenance was done. The classic red fire extinguisher is required maintenance every 6-years. This  will ensure the internal parts of the fire extinguisher are in good condition and will work in event of a emergency. 

How many fire extinguishers do I need for my business?

The goal is one fire extinguisher for every 3,000 square feet and every 75 ft. of travel distance. Travel distance represents the distance it would take to walk to the fire extinguisher with no obstruction in the way such as: walls, counter tops, desks, etc. Ceilings 10ft. or higher will require a 10# ABC fire extinguisher. Other hazards such as paper storage, flammable liquids, kitchen appliances, and so on will also require additional coverage. Axis Fire & Safety offers a FREE fire extinguisher assessment. Different Types of Fire Alarms?

Two major types of fire alarms are Ionization fire alarms and photoelectric fire alarms. Ionization alarms detect flaming, fast moving fires such as furniture, trash can fires, etc. Photoelectric fire alarms are for smoky, smoldering fires, such as electrical fires that start behind a wall.  There is also fire alarms that sensor both types of fires at once. 

Can Fire Sprinklers be Activated by Smoke?

No, fire sprinklers are only activated by heat, which means smoke will not cause your sprinklers to go off. 

Commercial Kitchen Suppression Systems

The State Fire Marshal and Department of Insurance require Kitchen Suppression Systems to be inspected every 6 months or twice a year.
